LUBBOCK, TEXAS — Smartfield™, Inc., an information technology company focused on sustainable agriculture, announced today that it will be building a dealer distribution network aimed at fullscale deployment of Smartfield’s plant canopy temperature sensing technology for the benefit of growers around the world.
For the past five years, Smartfield has had the opportunity to conduct extensive research on many crops around the world which has provided the company with the data to strengthen its proprietary algorithms and fine-tune its SmartCrop® System. The Standard SmartCrop® sensor measures continuous crop canopy temperature (a significant predictor of plant stress) using an infrared thermometer and reports data back to Smartfield servers where they are automatically analyzed and sent to its customers to make timely decisions. Real-time plant health information is imperative to maximizing the yield potential for any crop.
Smartfield CEO, Steve M. Hawkins indicated that the company is now ready to bring value to growers by helping them understand their crop stress on a continuous basis. “We are collecting continuous measurements from the field and converting this “Big Data” into meaningful and manageable information that results on an easy-to-use tool to make timely fact-based decisions” said Hawkins.
Joel Hohenberger, COO, noted that the company is prepared to meet consumer demand at a time where precision agriculture and water conservation are vital for sustainability for growers and the industry. “Smartfield gives growers and their advisors peace of mind knowing they are making the right decisions about their crop. By continuously monitoring the status of your crop, you can avoid excessive pumping and irrigation costs, thus maximizing your return on investment.” Hohenberger said.
During the past five years Smartfield’s SmartCrop® system has repeatedly achieved reductions of 20 – 40% water usage compared to several other irrigation scheduling tools while preserving yield potential. This reduction on water usage is possible because Smartfield uses the plant as the sensor and calls for irrigations only when the plant needs it.
Smartfield uses proprietary algorithms that integrates real-time environmental and physical plant measurements to produce hundreds of thousands data points per season. Researchers and growers can learn more about Smartfield’s technology at www.smartfield.com and order products through their local Smartfield dealer.
